Dragonboat: When heart beats at the pace of a drum

The Dragonboat: an exciting sport practiced aboard original boats with the head and tail of a dragon!

Dragon boat racing is now a sport which is practised worldwide in boats of standardized dimensions (12.66 m/41.5 ft long, 1.06 m/3.5 ft wide) by crews of 20 athletes who paddle to the beat of a drum played by an onboard drummer. A dragon boat is steered by a sweep standing at the stern.

Dragon boating originated in China over 2,000 years ago when, according to legend, the Chinese poet and statesman Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River in protest at the humiliations inflicted upon his people by the then ruling power. Upon learning of his suicide, local fishermen took to the river in large boats, and while looking for his body, they splashed the water with their paddles in order to keep the fish away from it.

Dragon boat racing ticks all the boxes of the new interpretation of the intrinsic values of modern sport: a type of activity which is performed by athletes with high levels of physical fitness and great technical skills, a team sport in which each member contributes to the success of his crew, a popular sport, a crowd-puller providing opportunities for get-togethers and celebrations.
